Ageism - Shifting Our Own Internal Dialog

I once worked on a volunteer, humanitarian, charity team that had two members over the age of 80. One ran our projects in Nepal and she traveled there every three months. The other showed up one day ecstatic that he had been able to buy his yearly downhill ski pass for only $20.  It was the special 80+ year old deal.

In fact, I have noticed more and more that there are movies and shows out with wonderful stories about people who are older, or featuring older actors in lead roles. Queen Latifah landed a true bad-ass female role in The Equalizer, at the age of 51. Or one of the most amazing examples, Betty White, still working at age 99.

Our limitations are not due to our age, but due to our changing interests and our capacity both mental and physical. It is true that these decline as we get older but the rate in which it happens, is completely individual.

So what does all this mean for you? Simply stated, you have the power to overcome ageism, and it should start with … your own mind … your own actions … your own choices.

Here’s a couple simple tips:

1) The next time you catch yourself thinking or saying “I’m too old for that.” Rephrase the sentence. If you no longer have an interest in that, then state it that way.  “I no longer have an interest in that.”  Or “I choose not to do that anymore.”

When we make a conscious choice, we retain our power. Growing older is no longer an excuse that drains and defeats us.

2) If you catch yourself thinking “I am too old for that.”

But it’s something you find fun; want to do and can participate in some capacity even if it’s in a modified version… THEN DO IT!

Be the leader. Stop caring what you imagine in your mind, others may think of you.

Live with some gusto.

Go dancing… fall in love again …. swim in the ocean… learn something new … discover your inner creativity … and make new friends.

There is a powerful quote by Mark Twain:

“Do not complain about growing old. It is a privilege denied to many.”

The reality is that many of us need to make modifications as our physical capacities evolve. But age itself should never be an excuse to hold us back from engaging in activities that bring us and those around us, joy.

Bloom is a Community of adults 50+ who are choosing to defy societal norms of ageing and retirement, but even more importantly I think, is that we are choosing to shift our own mindsets, learn something new and connect with like-minded people.
